Mix of Snow and Sleet then Freezing rain then changing to rain

Weather is changing rapidly this Wednesday afternoon. Dewpoints are low, temps are upper 30's and the cold air aloft is staying put for most of this storm. Sleet is now widespread in northern Georgia and coming up Interstate 85 well ahead of schedule. The temps aloft are supportive of snow for a few hours from about Shelby westward. The mountains should be cold enough for all snow for quite afew hours tonight, perhaps several inches there before a changeover. For the Shelby area, I think any snow will be short lived, then the sleet will come in and take over for a while. Eventually, the sleet should give way to freezing rain and sleet mixture through the night, until well after midnight when our temps hover right around 32 until dawn. The amounts of precip are still a question mark at this late stage, the models have busted terribly on this weather event in terms of timing especially, and the amounts look pretty juicy just looking at the radar.
Bottom line> Watch your temperatures and dewpoints tonight and monitor that radar for trends.

The precip could get into Rutherford and Cleveland Counties around dark, and with our cold ground, sleet could accumulate quickly.

Beyond this, we turn very cold starting Friday. The next 2 weeks look CA-CA-Cold!
I'll let you know when another storm develops as anything that comes our way would most likely be all snow.

  1. Thanks for the update, sounds like it is going to a closer call than I was expecting.
