Folks in Shelby are still waiting for the snow to arrive, but I'm afraid time is running out for real substantial snow there. The snow line is stuck in upper Cleveland and Rutherford County where up to 10" of snow has fallen today, and more is on the way tonight.
Now its a race against getting colder air aloft to finally reach the highway 74 corridor, and the moisture getting out of here. The best way to tell is to keep an eye on the radar in South Carolina to see how the back edge lines up. I think the precip will slowly taper over Cleveland County through the night, with a possible changeover to mostly snow by 8 Pm or so. Otherwise what you see is what you get, looks like all the mess will end during the middle of the night and freezing drizzle will linger into the early morning.
For the Foothills and mountains, this was a big one. Asheville already has many power outages and over 12" of snow. All the foothill counties will likely get over 1 foot, from upper Cleveland and Rutherford toward Hickory and Boone...see how close this is? Some spots in the mountains will be near 2 feet, and power outages are occuring quickly. Roads are closed and impassable.
If you got snow, hope you enjoyed it. If not, well it was a razor close call. Much of the area is glazed and iced over with nearly 2" of sleet.
We'll be following another winter storm soon. Very soon.
