Another Winter Storm On the Way for North Carolina

As if the big snow storm for Asheville, Hickory and Boone wasn't enough last week, and this week's devastating Icestorm in parts of the mountains, we aren't done with Winter yet.

What is coming up has enormous potential, yet again, and all of these gulf lows this year are amazing precip dumpers--just loaded with moisture. The Christmas Day rain for Shelby dropped 2" in just 6 hours. The weather models had it pegged perfectly, and have been very accurate in terms of our heavy duty precip makers since about late September.

As usual, our area is bisected on the computer charts for the Upcoming New Years Eve storm.   The models are trending colder aloft with each run, so if you're looking for snow, you may be in luck in Shelby this time. Its too early to say what type of precip it will be for sure, but it doesn't look like plain rain.  There will be an arctic high pressure, in the damming position, and this particular setup looks a little bit colder than the last one that sent Shelby to 30 degrees with sleet and freezing rain.

The track of the low is classic. It starts in the Gulf and very slowly crawls up the East Coast as a blizzard. Usually, Asheville , Hickory and Shelby get big snows from a track and setup like this...usually close to 1 foot. Whereas Greenville Spartanburg, Gastonia and Charlotte are on the mix line and freezing rain, sleet, and snow lines. Really too early to call, a change in temps aloft will mean the difference between having another heavy rain and 33, or a big icestorm or snowstorm... but the potential on this one is big.

Following the storm, a cold arctic outbreak to start our new year off right.

Keep checking my blog for daily updates.  Here's the surface and upper charts for New Years Eve. from the European Model:
