Thought I'd throw out an update for what could be an exciting week for Winter Storm lovers. The map above is the forecast chart valid for later next Sunday, January 13th. The models have been pretty consistent for days now, regarding a low pressure developing in the Gulf next weekend. What happens this week is that we warm up, then have 2 cold fronts go through, each producing rain. The last front comes through Friday and is followed by much colder air. This cold air isn't brutal for January, but is just cold enough for the western Carolinas if there were to be moisture for some snow. Next up, a storm dropping down the Rockies, diving extremely far south, and developing into a healthy Gulf Low. As you know, Shelby residents really want a low far to the south to get a good chance for a Winter storm. What the GFS model shows now is a real "classic" Piedmont snowstorm, with just enough cold air dammed up on the front side of the storm, and then pouring in on the backside, as the storm turns into a raging Nor'easter...just like the days of old! Its too early to get serious with this yet, but since there appears to be a storm to atleast follow, and the fact we're not in such a dry pattern any more, I'd give this option a viable chance of actually occurring. I'll keep watching it, and come Wednesday if its still showing up, I'll look into it more.
You have to go back to February 26, 2004 to find our last big snow. We're due.
